Listening: to Elizabethan madrigals on Radio 3. Bliss. (Yes, I’m weird.)

Reading: alternating between ‘On the Road Bike’ by Ned Boulting, and Edmund de Waal’s ‘The White Road’.

The former is fun, though not quite as good as others of Boulting’s that I’ve read. (’How I Won the Yellow Jumper’ and ‘101 Damnations’.) it’s about people I find less interesting, and there are fewer jokes, so far.

The latter is a love poem to porcelain, which needs to be read in small gobbets to fully appreciate. Good to find that de Waal shares my view of 18th century porcelain, which he describes as ‘passive-aggressive’! I remember walking through a museum – possibly the Bowes? – which had room after room of the stuff, and feeling ashamed that I found it boring. I know that I would not find large numbers of De Waal pots boring, even though they are so plain. Plain, but subtle.

Watching: Ride London Classique earlier today, Ride London Surrey tomorrow.

Making: another experimental vessel. Will felting and knitted lace work? Watch this space.

Loving. A newly bought CD by Alex Mendham and his Orchestra, first heard on (you guessed it) Radio 3. It’s 20’s and 30’s music played by a modern band and it’s great. (Told you I was weird.)

Feeling: relaxed after a hectic week. Two spritzers have helped.

Anticipating: getting back to some arty stuff after a hectic week when I managed very little art stuff.

Planning: a bit more sampling.

Listening: to silence again. The clock is ticking, but apart from that, all is quiet.
Reading: still ‘Dowager Empress Cixi’. I’m reading it slowly, interspersed with lighter stuff, because it needs concentration. I’ve reached her death, and the appointment of a child successor, who will become ‘The Last Emperor’.
Watching: still Le Tour. Unfortunately Cav has gone, but it’s been a great tour for Brits.

Making: I’ve completed last week’s sample, except it’s turned into a finished piece, probably the first one since the degree show I’ve been (almost) satisfied with.

Loving: a visit from most of the family to celebrate our 45th wedding anniversary. Fun, but I’m glad now of the silence and a chance to recover!

Feeling: a little worried about a special CD I’ve misplaced – but as DH said, it must be in the house somewhere.

Anticipating: five days grandparenting next week – it will be fun but exhausting.

Planning: what to do with the left over food!.

Listening: to the sound of silence. Not the Simon and Garfunkel song, just silence. Apart from the clock ticking, Wensleydale turning a page and my fingernails on this keyboard.

Reading: still Jung Chang’s ‘Dowager Empress Cixi’. I’m learning a lot about Chinese history, which I’m ashamed to say I know very little about.

Watching: still the Tour. Go Cav!

Making: another knitted sample. I want to make a flat circular base: I bought a book on knitted circles (really) and I’ve had to try three of the different versions to find one which actually lies flat. The photos look flat but my versions aren’t!

Loving: spending time with our grandchildren and their parents today at my grandson’s last ballet class, before he moves up to the big boy classes.

Feeling: easily thrown when things go wrong – a reaction to recent events and a very bad night last night.

Anticipating: busy times over the last few weeks while the grands are off school.

Planning: what we will do on all those (hopefully) sunny days with them.

Listening: Radio Three, Record Review. The sort of programme which can lead to the spending of money, though not today.

Anticipating: the start of the Proms on Friday.
Reading: Jung Chang’s ‘Empress Dowager Cixi’, a fascinating account of 19thC China. Everything that the recent Channel 4 documentary on another Chinese empress wasn’t – clear, well structured, academic, without frequent assertions that archaeologists were ‘amazed!’, and without the drawback on a talking head who looked like Mr Tumble.

Watching: Le Tour. Still.
Loving: Dimension Data – and Britain’s – success in Le Tour. Four victories in 7 stages! And all in a good cause.
Feeling: happy about that, less happy about the state of the world elsewhere. See above.

Planning: a sampler of embroidery on knitting. To be felted later, of course.

Wondering: why I can’t persuade WordPress to space this the way I want to space it- or even consistently.

Watching – Tour de France highlights, after watching it live all afternoon. Yes, I’m addicted.

Anticipating – another three weeks watching Le Tour.

Feeling – cheered up a bit by Cav’s victory. I needed some good news.

Listening – Radio 3, when Le Tour is not on.

Making – another experimental knitted vessel. Knitting and Tour watching go well together.

Planning – how to fit in non-knitting arty activities around daytime TV watching (not something I usually do).

Loving – the evening sunshine lighting up my garden.
